Ometepe Island is a 276 square kilometer jewel in the great Lake Nicaragua and is considered the largest island located in a freshwater lake
The island’s name derives from the Nahuatl words "ome", which means two, and "tepetl", which mean hill or mountain: the place of two mountains. The mountains are actually volcanos whose striking profiles can be seen for miles around.
Ometepe has long been a refuge for many local tribes creating a unique legacy only found on this site.
How to Get to Ometepe Island
From Managua you can take a bus to the town of Rivas at Roberto Huembes market. Once you arrive in Rivas get off the bus at Shell gas station. From there you can take a taxi or a bus to San Jorge port.
From the port take a small boat or a ferry to Moyogalpa, on the Isla Ometepe. From here there are taxis and a buses always waiting for arriving passengers to take you to Altagracia.
We are located in Altagracia 50 meters east from the mayors office in center of the town.
